What is Nei Gong 内功?

Nei Gong is the ancient and original practices developed in Shaolin Temple.

To understand NeiGong, we need to understand a bit about Shaolin Temple (Wudang Mountain). Both were well-known as centers for Martial Arts, but they were also institution of learning, focuses on:

  • Martial Arts
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine.
  • Philosophy and Religion (Buddhism in Shaolin, Daoism in WuDang)

Shaolin (and Wudan) can be compared to a modern university, where you have different levels of learning and students. Hence, novice monks start with the Bachelor Degree of hard, physical martial arts, and they progress to the Masters Degree of Soft Internal Martial Arts with Jin, Yi and Qi. The highest level monks, those at the PhD level, would be taught NeiGong.

NeiGong was a form of exercise, sometimes referred to as Moving Meditation that combines the knowledge of all the 3 domains above. The practice of NeiGong develops both mind and body.
